Το Λάος σχεδιάζει να κατασκευάσει στον ποταμό Μεκόνγκ σχεδόν εκατό φράγματα έως το 2020, πολλά με άμεση χρηματοδότηση και υποστήριξη από την Κίνα, σε μια προσπάθεια να γίνει «η μπαταρία της Ασίας», εξάγοντας τα δύο τρίτα της ενέργειας που θα παράγει από τα νερά. Αλλά τα φράγματα απειλούν να πνίξουν το ήδη επιβαρυμένο ποτάμι.
